Instinct
It’s reliable. It’s a signal.
You noticed something was off in the meeting. A read on someone, a decision that didn’t sit right, a sense that what was said wasn’t what was actually happening.
You brushed it because you are in a new job, new organization. You don’t quite have the handle on things. You don’t know the room yet.
But the read didn’t come from knowing the room. It never did.
Here’s what goes on underneath.
Somewhere in the first few minutes, your brain took in things you weren’t consciously tracking — a pause half a second too long, an answer that technically addressed the question without actually answering it, a tone that didn’t match the words carrying it. None of that was obvious. You, however, unconsciously noticed it, processed it and registered it, surfacing a feeling: something’s off here.
That’s not intuition in the blind.
It’s recognizing the non-verbal, it's recognizing patterns you have seen before, only now with experience, running at a speed you don’t consciously follow.
Every meeting where someone’s words and posture didn’t line up. Every negotiation where the pause meant more than the sentence. Every version of this exact dynamic, in every room you’ve ever been in that had people in it managing what they said around what they meant. You’ve been building this instrument for years. And it doesn't disappear with a new title.
It’s this knowing that fires, even in a room you’ve never been in before.
The organization may be new to you, the people may be new to you, even the industry could be new. But what’s happening inside the room, the human patterns playing out in it, isn’t.
And the reason it is easy to dismiss it, is because it doesn’t arrive with evidence. It arrives as a feeling, fast and wordless, before you’ve consciously identified a single one of the signals that produced it.
Feelings without visible evidence are easy to defer — let me learn more before I trust this. But the evidence was already there. It just processed faster than your conscious mind could catch up and label it.
